Torrid Flora

Opening Reception: Sunday, April 12, 2015, 12 - 6pm

On view until May, 7, 2015
Hibiscus Room, Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 S Red Rd, Miami, FL 33156

Torrid Flora, features artwork by Jennifer Basile, Xavier Cortada, Sarah Henderson, Deborah Mitchell and Tina Salvesen which look beyond the blue skies and palm trees of our tropical surroundings.  As climate change and global warming are felt with the change of each season, Torrid Flora revisits Aristotle’s Torrid Zone assessments and presents a hauntingly view of its lush vegetation and plant life. Being the first to study the world’s climate, Aristotle divided it into three zones: Frigid, Temperate and Torrid. The Torrid Zone was deemed by the philosopher as uninhabitable, with weather conditions too hot for life. It is the nearest to the equator, reaching from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. Miami stands just above the line of Aristotle’s simple classification, but its tropical conditions are evident. With the rising temperatures, are we headed in the direction in which he so long predicted?

Through the Looking Glass, a solo show by Jason Aponte

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 10, 2015, 7 - 10pm
On view until February 8, 2015
Wynwood Exhibition Center, 297 NW 23rd Street, Miami, FL

In Through the Looking Glass, Jason Aponte presents his constantly evolving Reflections Series, which was started in 2010. He paints overlaying images, initially found naturally in the reflection of windows of shops and cafes, and now developed into digitally manipulated scenes. Aponte is intrigued by how the connectivity between separate images create an entity of its own, with a new meaning and underlining feeling made possible by this juxtapositioning.  In the earlier works of the series, he imposed sexual imagery into window displays to expose the most private and inner thoughts people have as they carry out their lives. As the series progressed, he moved on to fantasy like sceneries, imposing scenes from popular childhood movies with mundane scenes we encounter. With these he creates a window to the past, looking through time to revive memories which have been lost. Aponte’s oil paintings, in this extensive review of his work, gives each of us a sense of discovery as new details are found by gazing at the work. Aponte’s conceptual imagery is carried out through traditional technique and painting style. He invites us to interpret his work with our unique set of experiences and reflect on private and past memories as we recognize icons and ourselves.

Sprite Brasil Mural Project. December 2014

Art Habit along with Brazilian Art Developers, bring together four street artists from Brazil to Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach, 2014. The collaboration between Bruno Big, Marcelo Ment, Rafael Uzai, and Mateu Velasco comes to live in a 100+ feet mural at the Bakehouse Art Complex, a staple in the Miami art community as a pioneer, providing legal walls for street artists since the 80s. While each artist represents their style, the synchronicity of the completed mural represents a refreshing new addition to Miami's walls.

Symbiotic Promise by Ernesto Kunde

Curated by Ananda DeMello. May 9-June 8, 2014

The artist’s intensive examination of mangroves, sea grapes and other native plant life presents a heightened awareness and a sensory experience of our surroundings.  The artist transforms the gallery through his sculptural overlaying of paintings, creating a parallel to the symbiotic relationship between people and nature, and the promise we each need to make to care for the natural surroundings that are vital to our survival.
